The Rostov region in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
Among events of the Great Patriotic War the important place is taken by actions of the Soviet troops to Dona. They proceeded about two years, from October, 1941 to August, 1943.
In plans of Hitlerite command Barbarossa the special value was allocated for mastering the southern regions of the USSR. It hoped to undermine military power of the Soviet Union, having deprived of its rich agricultural, important industrial and raw centers. Hitlerites considered also that occupation of the territory by them on the southern wing of the Soviet-German front will promote change of a foreign policy of Turkey in their advantage and will create Germany an opportunity for invasion further through Transcaucasia to the countries of the Middle East. Fascists considered Rostov-on-Don "gate" of the Caucasus. They attached great value to its capture. Special awards waited for participants of this march. Hitler gave the order to mint the bronze medal "For Capture of Rostov". In honor of the commander of the I tank army it was planned to rename the capital of the Quiet Don into the city of Klejst - on - Don.
For implementation of the plans on this direction the Hitlerite command allocated large forces: The I tank army of the general Kleist as a part of 2nd motorized, the 49th mountain and Italian forwarding cases. By October 22, 1941 the fascist group incorporated 13 divisions, including three tank, two CC: "Viking" and "Adolf Hitler" and some other parts.
For fighting differences at liberation of the Rostov region from fascist aggressors the honourable names "Donskoy" were appropriated to 11 connections and parts. Among them there are the I Guards Don tank corps (before the 26th), the 2nd Guards Tatsinsky tank corps (before the 24th), the 3rd Guards Rostov-Donskoy a destructive aviaregiment, 130 and 416 Taganrog rifle divisions, 5 gv. Zimovnikovsky mekhkorpus, 6 gv. Don destructive aviadivision, the 6th Guards Taganrog bombing aviadivision, 75 Don shooting regiment.
167 guerrilla groups, the underground organizations and other patriotic groups worked in the cities and districts of the area during occupation.
For the courage and courage shown in fight against fascists, about 280 people – natives of the Rostov region were awarded the highest rank of the country - the Hero of the Soviet Union. Four of them were awarded this rank twice. 57 people became full gentlemen of awards of Glory.
For the feats made in the territory of the Rostov region, more than 40 people were awarded ranks of the Hero of the Soviet Union.
By the decree of Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR in 1982 for the courage and courage shown by residents of Rostov in days of the Great Patriotic War, the city of Rostov-on-Don it was awarded the order Patriotic war of the I degree.
In the run-up to the celebration of the 63rd anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War to Rostov-on-Don the honorary title "The city of military glory" was given.
11.9 thousand participants and disabled people of the Great Patriotic War, 35.3 thousand home front workers live in the Rostov region (as of 01.02.2013).
