Memoirs are written down in 2014.

In the 41st... The Russian-Romanian border had a business. There was also going to celebrate the 20 anniversary, with army friends. But the destiny introduced the amendments.

"I have Birthday on June 20th. And men say: "Sanya, well, what talk can be, we will note". Still in advance agreed - on the 22nd, Sunday. Girls wanted to go to the lake, there court shoes, there", - the veteran of the Great Patriotic War Alexander Karpenko remembers. But instead of court shoes and girls - the first real fight. Instead of champagne cottons - gun volleys. In the remained military years the service was rather quiet. And in 1950 suggested to teach in RAU where worked decades. Sighs - to close military higher education institution was crime. Rockets - it is rather a weapon of the world - often they constrain leaders of the countries from the open military conflicts. All hope for those who suit for great-grandsons, the veteran with a sad smile says. Maybe they will be more perspicacious and all will make in order that war did not happen to double-check of what test the Russian soldiers are made".

 Dawn on fire

"There passed 69 years as the Great Patriotic War ended, the most cruel and bloody of all wars in the history of mankind. It claimed more than 26 million human lives only of the Soviet people. I will begin with background. I studied in the Rostov preparatory school and when learned that my friends came to an artillery special school, there wanted. We graduated from the Rostov artillery school in May, 1941. Had to give us a holiday, but for some reason did not give, and sent to pass military service to the western regions of our country. I was in the 25th Chapayevsk division in Bessarabia (so then Moldova was called) in a shooting regiment the senior of the battery and the commander of the first platoon at the same time. There were to me 20 years. I looked at the economy entrusted me and gasped: dear mom! We have six tools, everyone four horses, so at me have to pull 24 horses, and all have to be well-groomed, fed... Approximately on June 16-17 to us declared that there will be exercises. We were near border with Romania — about 30 kilometers, and during the exercises drew near even closer, there were about one and a half kilometers to border. On June 21 there was Saturday, we after the exercises were tired and settled to sleep, having spread under itself fresh hay. Well I remember that tools stood on a position approximately in 15 meters from each other. Somewhere at four o'clock in the morning when dawn only slightly began to dawn, terrible firing began. I woke up and I think: till the dawn still far why so early decided to begin exercises? I look: all border on fire. By phone received the order: "Battery, action! The armed divisions are transported through border. Perhaps, it is provocation, as in the Far East". Frontier guards conducted a battle too. We beat with fighting shells, only and was heard "shur-shur" — approximately such sound makes the departing shell. Here so the Great Patriotic War began for me … Approximately data came to nine o'clock in the morning that it is not provocation, but the beginning of war. Parts of the Romanian troops tried to be transported through border, the infantry went to hand-to-hand. Since morning as soon as it is light, we saw a huge number of planes. They flew it is low towards Odessa for bombing, we were not touched. We held the southern border 28 days. Continuous fights were going day and night. They say that at the beginning of war there was not enough ammunition — personally I did not see it. We had a lot of ammunition. And for the 29th day the team followed: to prepare for withdrawal. There was a threat of encirclement of Kiev, and to us ordered to depart to Odessa … Was at war as a part of the Southern front which was created from parts of the Odessa military district. In one of fights got a severe wound then spent nearly half a year in hospitals. After all, me, the lieutenant Karpenko was recognized restrictedly as fit the second degree (that gave the chance to remain in the ranks of the Red Army, but not to be involved in fighting), and in the winter the 1942nd seconded to the order of the military commandant of the city of Rostov-on-Don. The commandant sent me, the young lieutenant the instructor of general military education to the Proletarian district military registration and enlistment office of the city of Rostov.

I had to prepare on fundamentals of military science of those experts which "reservation" was given, that is for the time being they were no right to call on the front. But these experts all the same should be trained on fundamentals of military science. And I prepared them. Learned as it is correct to handle weapon how to prepare a grenade for fighting application how to apply incendiary mix, etc. But, besides, it was necessary to be engaged also in additional work. The fact is that before capture of Rostov the city underwent strong bombing. To the middle of July of the 1942nd on Engels Street (nowadays – Big Garden), beginning from the railway station and finishing with Sokolov Avenue, there is practically no whole building left. In the city there were few troops therefore all workers of military registration and enlistment offices including me, involved in works on clearing of blockages and rescue of the people who were under fragments. After each bombing we at once arrived to the place of destructions and organized carrying out from the destroyed buildings of wounded. It was necessary to patrol streets at night, to catch and neutralize so-called "glowworms" – spies who by means of rockets specified to enemy pilots where it is necessary to drop bombs. Were engaged also in creation at the enterprises of groups of self-defense. And all this time in the city there was an intense training of defensive boundaries. Approximately at the end of May
The 1942nd on distant and near approaches to Rostov the special groups allocated from the enterprises tore off trenches and trenches. But, as archive materials testify, the Rostov defensive boundary grew at the end of 1941. It occupied on the right river bank Don the site in 155 km on the front and from 20 to 30 km in depth, surrounding the cities of Rostov and Novocherkassk with four lines of defense: "", "And", "Rear" and "City". All boundaries were equipped with anti-tank ditches, eskarpa, posts, wire entanglements, minefields, land mines, had 80 pillboxes. The chief of task force of ukreprayon of the Rostov direction of the Southern front major general Chernyaev headed construction of ROR. Constant garrison made the 70th (the commandant – the lieutenant colonel Gordeev) and the 158th (the commandant – the lieutenant colonel Kosonogov) the strengthened areas – only 12 detached machine-gun and artillery battalions and 6 trench and fire-throwing companies numbering 8,878 fighters and commanders who occupied the first two lines of defense.

The city enterprises prepared more than 7 thousand reinforced concrete and metal caps, 12 thousand national teams of reinforced concrete weapon emplacements, 12 thousand metal hedgehogs, 70 thousand meters of a barbed wire, etc. for equipment of defensive boundaries. 50 thousand residents of Rostov, hundreds of thousands of residents of the Rostov region, the Krasnodar and Stavropol regions were mobilized for defensive works".

Special agent's failure

Alexander Zakharovich watched the movie "Tehran-43", but it did not make a special impression on it. The colonel Karpenko himself could add not one episode to this movie. In 1943 it was too... near Tehran. And, of course, with a secret mission.

I will remind a movie plot: in 1943 in Tehran on the eve of negotiations of heads of governments of three powers the group of Nazi agents prepares terrorist attack to be through with them. However our vigilant investigation saves situation.

On a question: "How you got there?" Alexander Zakharovich answers: "Yes here, who could have foretold that. I got a severe wound, to me ruined half-backs. However after hospital I was sent to Tashkent in a spare artillery regiment the commander of the battery. Once cause to the headquarters of the Central Asian military district and begin to ask in detail: where was born where lived... I thought that I was decided to be appointed to "katyusha", in 1941-42 they were secret — all recruited both drivers, and tipper-ofs from command structure. So anything and, without having explained, I was sent to Ashgabat, from there — to Krasnovodsk. Shipped us on the steamship. Quiet, beautiful sea. We float, I think that already Baku has to appear, and it something is not visible. Suddenly message: "Companions commanders! We arrive in Iran". The destiny brought to Iran. Speaks, once told - exercises. To take fighting positions and to wait for instructions. Did not wait for instructions. And only then learned that protected national leaders - Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill while those discussed further actions of troops of the anti-Hitlerite coalition. At once specified: if someone leaves to the city, will get acquainted with someone, will want to communicate — will be sent in strafbat to the front. I then was already the first lieutenant, and appointed me the deputy commander of a mountain regiment.

In the protection of Stalin I did not stand. But at that moment in Tehran Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt met. There took place the conference of big "three". Our task was in Tehran not to appear for the time being, and to be nearby in mountains. The situation was intense. Stalin settled down in the building of the embassy — it was the large territory enclosed with a high fence with strong protection. Inside it was very beautiful: roses, tangerine trees, orange. Churchill and Roosevelt stopped in the embassies too, but they were in the city. To meet at a conference, they needed to pass on the city, and it constituted big danger. The counterintelligence knew that Hitler charged to Skortsena (diversionary actions of this agent were included into secret textbooks of intelligence agencies of the whole world — a comment of the author) to liquidate "three". In Tehran instantly in one night 500 people who were ready to commit this diversion - extermination of heads of the states were arrested. Hitler, what hoped for: if they are destroyed or captivated - a victory at him in a pocket. Stalin persuaded Churchill and Roosevelt to move to his rate. It helped to save them lives.

We were in mountains as a reinforcement, in the city the army was not. Horses were not, gave us mules. We suffered, loading on them tools. I remember that mules had metal saddles, powerful, we also tried to attach tools to them. A part of our soldiers brought protection of the road, and the road interesting there — entirely the tunnels punched in mountains. The order that we took a complete set of arms that we had mines both big, and small arrived. And with these arms we went hiking — the mule followed a mule through tunnels, and so day after day. We had to approach closer Tehran, but so that we were not found, and to wait for the order in mountains. Kept in contact on the radio set.

Apricot wedding

"Yes, fascinating campaign! But we did not engage. It was without it. When operation ended, the commander told that he is ready to present me to an award or to give month of a holiday. You only present, in the middle of war — a holiday! I could not even dream of it. And of course, chose it and used with benefit: married!

Holiday I was given in 1944, and day of my wedding — June 8, 1944. When I arrived to Rostov, the city was strongly destroyed after fights for release from fascist invaders. And I had a girlfriend in Rostov. And I thought: war will end soon, the great number of heroes order bearers will come in large numbers to Rostov and will begin to look after my Leah... Decided not to lose the moment — here we and celebrated a wedding while I was on vacation. There were a few guests, the closest people. Present, despite very poor then life we found, than to celebrate a wedding. There was also something spirits, both bread, and sausage, and still apricots... There is such apricot wedding. You know, with the wife I was lucky. 66 years were lived in perfect harmony".
